Supporting students toward English proficiency

In this 15-hour, asynchronous book study course, authors Tan Huynh and Beth Skelton address the largest subgroup of English learners, those currently labeled as long-term English learners. In their book, Huynh and Skelton intentionally use the term experienced multilinguals as an affirmation that these students are capable of reaching the highest academic standards under the optimal conditions. Huynh and Skelton’s book guides teachers in cultivating these conditions.

In this course, the authors will share additional details and strategies from each chapter of their Corwin book entitled Long-Term Success for Experienced Multilinguals . The course includes time to read sections of the book, which counts toward the total number of hours in the course. From their research and decades of experience working with experienced multilinguals, Huynh and Skelton share:

  • a new, affirming shift in perspective on this group of students;
  • a researched-informed, classroom tested instructional framework;
  • a teacher-friendly lesson planning template;
  • strategies for accommodating summative assessments;
  • strategies to establish comprehensible input;
  • approaches to structure academic output; and
  • an approach to school-wide implementation.


This 15 hour course is asynchronous and self-paced with a dedicated course facilitator to guide you. You can earn 1 graduate credit through UMass Global for this course for a fee of an additional $75. More information available upon enrollment.

The content was very applicable to my role as a teacher and Department leader. Throughout the course, I was able to adapt summative tasks, resources and activities for units I will begin teaching in August. Additionally, this course really supported my leadership role, providing beautifully scaffolded resources and protocols that I can share with my team as we continue to support our experienced multilinguals. I really enjoyed the visuals in the book!

Meet Your Instructor, Tan

Tan (@TanKHuynh) is a career teacher, consultant, and author specializing in language acquisition and literacy development. Tan has taught students from 5th to 10th grade in public, private, charter, and international schools.  He has served as a language specialist and is currently a secondary social studies teacher.  Tan shares teaching strategies on his blog and podcast with the hopes of celebrating teachers who answer the call to serve multilingual learners.

Beth has 30 years of experience as a language educator. She has worked with early childhood, elementary, middle, high school and adult language learners in rural, urban, suburban, and international school settings. She is an active board member of CoTESOL (Colorado Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages). She has published materials for teaching adult English Learners with the TPRS method entitled Putting it Together. She holds a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Teacher Education and certification in German and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education.
