COURSE DESCRIPTION

Immigration is a complex issue with laws and policies that constantly change. These changes greatly impact many of our students, especially English learners. Have you wondered about recent news of migrant families and children being bused across the country? This course will look at what is happening regarding the migrants bused to Northern cities, explore why it is happening, and provide a background of the migrants from Venezuela and other countries. You will also learn about the basic concepts and policies underlying the immigration system in the United States and how to support these migrant students and their families.

COURSE CONTENTS

In this course, Natasha Quiroga, Esq. will:

· explain recent headlines about busing migrants from the Southern border to Northern cities;

· discuss what happens to children and families once they arrive and how to support them;

· explore legal processes for asylum, border crossings, and paths to citizenship;

· review current data related to migrant families; and

· consider the politics and complexity of comprehensive immigration reform.

Natasha Quiroga, Esq.

Natasha has spent the past 20 years advocating for immigrant children, youth, and families as a lawyer, fundraiser, and executive director. Most recently, she directed a family engagement program in the Educational Opportunities Project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Natasha also led Flores Settlement Agreement monitoring visits to family and children’s detention facilities and managed pro bono engagement to support separated parents during the 2018 family separation crisis. Natasha has served as Executive Director of Escuela Bolivia (now Edu-Futuro) in Arlington, Virginia, and advised state and local education agencies on compliance with federal education laws at an education law firm.

Natasha received her J.D. and Master's in International Politics with a concentration in Children and Youth Development from American University. Natasha is fluent in Spanish and licensed to practice in New York.

Natasha is also the creator and instructor for our Legal Journey Pathway.
