The Understanding Muslim Students
Program
The Understanding Muslim Students Program is appropriate for any staff seeking to become more knowledgeable about their Muslim students. Educators will hear from leaders and experts on Islamic history and experience the culture through various activities.
This Program provides its participants with materials, resources, and accurate information first-hand. It stimulates meaningful discussions and delivers unbiased information. Participants complete the course with a new or enhanced understanding towards Muslim students and the ability to assure they are respected in their classrooms.
Each course in this Program is 15 hours and can be taken for 1 graduate credit with UMass Global. An additional $75 per course/credit is payable to UMass Global upon completion of the course.
Course 1 - Getting to Know your Muslim Students - 15 hours (1 graduate credit)
In the first 15 hour course of the Pathway, participants will:
- build a community of learners with a safe space to share and discuss;
- share relevant data about Muslim students;
- learn Arabic letters and common terms; and
- understand beliefs, daily practices, and holidays of Muslim students.
Course 2 - Muslims: Past & Present - 15 hours (1 graduate credit)
In this second 15 hour course of the Pathway, participants will:
- explore the history and structure of the mosque and arrange a visit; and
- consider the daily lives of American Muslim families.
Course 3 - Role of Muslims in the U.S. and Globally - 15 hours (1 graduate credit)
In this third 15 hour course of the Pathway, participants will:
- be introduced to Muslim inventions and influential Muslims;
- learn about art and music in Islam;
- hear from Muslim teachers and students about relevant instruction and accommodation; and
- share authentic resources for the classroom and independent knowledge building.
