With the background knowledge gained in our Instruction for Newcomers course, you can continue to build your understanding of how language and literacy develop, with a focus on early literacy. Regardless of age, this course provides numerous ideas for meeting students where they are and taking the next steps in literacy development.

In this course, you will:

  • review English proficiency levels and how to utilize them in differentiation;
  • examine best practices for creating a language rich classroom foundation; and
  • practice strategies that develop vocabulary, sentence level literacy, and take oral language/discourse into reading and writing.

This 15 hour course is asynchronous and self-paced with a dedicated course facilitator to guide you. You can earn 1 graduate credit through UMass Global for this course for a fee of an additional $75. More information available upon enrollment.
