Develop support strategies for you, your colleagues, students, and families using trauma informed best practices
Providing the right support is key to helping students navigate the challenges of transitioning to a new culture and school, especially when they've experienced trauma in their country or on their journey. This 15-hour course is designed specifically for the teacher, counselor, social workers, psychologist or support staff interested in learning more about how to support youth from immigrant and refugee backgrounds.
Learn about the four core stressors: trauma, isolation, resettlement, acculturation, and discover insights that will provide increased empathy for the migration journey (pre/during/post) your newcomer student has endured.
Learn to identify and respond to ways that newcomer stress and trauma may present in classroom and social settings. You'll also pick up strategies to support students you can implement with our practical approaches.
Join us as we map professional standards onto best practices for newcomer youth, including: direct and indirect services, planning and assessment, community engagement, and foundational services.
This 15-hour program helps you build out a service plan for your school while providing you with the foundations to better understand different cultures, the impact of trauma on students, and how to offer support within the frameworks of the classroom or school setting. You are also eligible to receive one graduate credit upon completion (more info on course on how to do this).
Plus you'll earn a certificate for 15 hours of professional development and have the option to apply for one graduate credit.
Help your immigrant and refugee students feel more empowered as they build their trust in you and this new school system.
You'll also learn strategies to help them connect with their peers so they can feel community and a sense of belonging.
